HA Fillers vs. Biostimulators.

Hyaluronic acid fillers replace volume instantly. Biostimulators invite your own collagen to build itself back slowly. Different tools for different goals — and at Modern Dermatology in South Tampa, often most effective used together.

At a glance

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers like Juvederm and Restylane are gel-based products that add immediate volume and can be precisely sculpted and even dissolved if needed. Biostimulators like Sculptra and Radiesse work through a slower mechanism — they nudge the skin to produce its own collagen over months. Our South Tampa dermatologists help you choose based on how quickly you want results, where on the face you want to build, and how long you want the effect to last.

HA Fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, RHA, and others) are clear gels made from a sugar molecule your body already produces. They add immediate, visible volume — useful for lips, tear troughs, cheeks, chin, and fine lines. Because HA is a known substrate, these fillers can be gently reshaped after placement and, if needed, fully dissolved with a small injection of hyaluronidase. They typically last somewhere between six months and two years depending on the product and the area treated. HA is our most common first-time filler and the tool of choice for precise, targeted work.

Sculptra

Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) biostimulator that does not add immediate volume. Instead, it triggers the skin's own collagen production over a series of sessions, typically two or three spaced several weeks apart. Results build gradually over three to six months and can last two years or longer. Sculptra is particularly well suited to restoring overall midface and temple volume in a soft, diffuse way that reads as rested rather than filled. Because the change is gradual and diffuse, it is not the tool for precise lip work or acute tear-trough correction.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) injectable that offers a hybrid effect: immediate volume plus gradual collagen stimulation as the product integrates. It is denser than most HA fillers, which makes it well suited to the deeper support needed along the jawline, chin, and hands. Results typically last twelve to eighteen months. Radiesse is not reversible in the same way HA is, so placement matters — we reserve it for anatomy that clearly benefits from its lifting capacity and is not subject to rapid change.

Which is right for you?

A short decision guide.

These are general starting points. The right plan is the one your dermatologist maps to your specific skin, history, and goals.

You want fuller lips or sharper cheek definition: HA filler. Precise, immediate, and reversible if you want to adjust.

You want to look overall rested over a few months: Sculptra. The gradual build reads as gently restored rather than filled.

You want structural support along the jaw or chin: Radiesse for deep structural work; HA (such as Voluma or RHA 4) is a reasonable alternative when reversibility is a priority.

You're treating crepey, sun-damaged hands: Radiesse is FDA-approved for this indication and often performs beautifully.

It's your first time and you're nervous: Start with HA. You get to see the result in the mirror before you leave, and if you change your mind, the product is reversible.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

Which looks more natural?

Both can look beautifully natural when placed thoughtfully. HA fillers are easier to fine-tune because they can be molded and dissolved; biostimulators look natural in a different way — the result builds so gradually that friends usually comment that you look rested, not different. Restraint and injector skill matter more than product choice.

Which lasts longer?

Biostimulators typically outlast HA fillers. Sculptra results can last two years or more; Radiesse roughly twelve to eighteen months. HA fillers range from six months in mobile areas like the lips to about two years for dense midface work.

Which is safer?

All three categories have strong safety records in trained hands. HA fillers have an advantage in reversibility — if something ever looks off, hyaluronidase dissolves the product. Biostimulators are not reversible, so injector expertise and anatomic planning are especially important.

Which hurts more?

Pain is usually comparable. Most injections use topical numbing plus lidocaine mixed into the product. The number of injection points and the sensitivity of the area treated have more to do with discomfort than the choice of product.

Can you use them together?

Yes. It is common for a treatment plan to layer approaches — biostimulator for diffuse volume, HA filler for precision work. Dr. Grob often builds a twelve-month plan that uses both in sequence.
